Burst pipe? What to do in the first 10 minutes

1. Shut off the main water

Find the main valve where the water line enters the home and turn it clockwise until it stops.

2. Drain the lines

Open a cold faucet on the bottom floor and flush toilets to empty the pipes.

3. Make it safe

If water is near outlets or appliances, switch off those circuits at the breaker, from a dry spot.

4. Protect your things

Move valuables, lift rugs and soak up standing water.

5. Take photos

Photograph the pipe, the water and anything wet.

6. Call a plumber

Tell them a pipe burst and the water is off. Many can come the same day.
